Parent goals and sub-goals

Learn how to create parent goals and sub-goals to structure your organizational workflow and align team objectives.

Structuring your company goals into a clear hierarchy helps teams see how individual milestones contribute to larger initiatives. In Grow, you can connect your targets by establishing a direct parent-child relationship between goals, ensuring alignment across your entire department.

Enable sub-goals in your settings

Before your team can start linking goals, an administrator must enable the sub-goals feature within your organization's configuration.

1. Navigate to Settings > HR (Grow) > Features (under the Goals section).

2. Mark the checkbox next to Sub-goals.

3. Save your changes to activate the functionality across your account.

Create and link your goals

Once the feature is enabled, you can build your goals hierarchy directly from your dashboard.

Create a new sub-goal

1. Navigate to Goals > New goal to open the creation editor.

2. Define the goal criteria normally.

3. If the designated goal owner already has at least one active goal established in the application, an + Add a parent goal button will be available in the editor.

4. Select the appropriate goal from the dropdown to assign it as the parent goal. This immediately turns your new goal into a sub-goal.

Link existing goals

You can also establish a hierarchical relationship after goals have already been created:

1. Edit any existing goal.

2. Locate the parent goal button and choose the goal you want to link it to.

Note: To establish a parent-child connection, the owners of both goals must match.

View sub-goals on the dashboard

Sub-goals are hidden from sight by default when you first open your dashboard to keep your main workspace organized and uncluttered.

You can easily identify which top-level goals contain nested child items by looking for an available expand/collapse toggle panel icon next to the goal's title. Click this toggle to reveal or hide the connected sub-goals directly within your list layout.
