Assigning Skills to Employees

The different ways to assign skills to employees, what each one is best for, and where the skills will show up.

Assigning skills to employees

There are three ways to assign skills to employees, and the right one depends on where you want those skills to appear. This article explains each method and what it works with, so you can pick the one that fits how you evaluate your team.

Note: Assigning skills to employees is available to administrators & HR

Choose the right method

Start here. The method you choose determines where the assigned skills show up and which type of review they work with.

Works with

Connect skills to positions

Setting expected skills for a role, fast

New reviews and employee profiles

Skill mappings

Structured frameworks across roles and seniority

New reviews and employee profiles

Assess in classic reviews

Assessing a skill in your classic 1-1 reviews

Classic reviews only

The first two methods work together and share the same result: skills and expected proficiencies that appear on employee profiles and in new reviews. The third method is separate, and applies only to classic reviews.

Note: By default, skills assigned through the classic reviews option only appear in classic reviews, not on employee profiles or in new reviews. A new review's skill assessment question can be configured to use this same assignment instead of positions or skill mappings, but that's not the preferred setup. See Assessing skills in reviews for when to use it. Skills connected through positions or mappings still don't appear in classic reviews.

Method 1: Connect skills to positions

This is the most direct way to say which skills a role should have and at what level. You assign skills to a position, and everyone in that position inherits them on their profile.

You'll need your positions set up first. See Create and manage positions.

  1. Go to Settings > Positions.

  2. Open the position you want to assign skills to.

  3. Go to the Skills tab.

  4. Click Add skills.

  5. Choose a skill from your skills library.

  6. Set the expected proficiency for that position.

The skill is now connected to the position, and applies to every employee assigned to it.

💡 Tip: Setting up several positions at once? You can import your skills and positions together from a file and let AI connect them for you, instead of adding skills position by position. This is the fastest way to get started. See Import skills with AI.

Method 2: Assign skills via skill mappings

Skill mappings are frameworks that connect positions, skills, and expected proficiencies across roles and seniority levels. Use them when you want more structure than assigning skills to a single position at a time.

There are two ways to connect an employee through a mapping:

  • From the position: assign a position to a skill mapping you've already created.

  • From the mappings page: create a mapping that connects positions, skills, and expected proficiencies together.

Building and publishing mappings is covered in its own guide. See Understanding and creating skills mappings.

Method 3: Assess a skill in classic reviews

If you run classic 1-1 reviews, you can mark a skill to be assessed in them. This option applies only to classic reviews. It doesn't connect skills to positions or profiles.

You turn this on from the skill itself in your skills library. See Step 5 of Managing your skills library for how to set it up.

A new review's skill assessment question can also source skills this way instead of using positions or skill mappings, mainly to support teams still transitioning to the newer setup. It isn't the preferred method. See Assessing skills in reviews for details.

Examples

Scenario: Setting expected skills for a new role
You've created a "Product Designer" position and want everyone in it assessed on the same skills. Go to Settings > Positions, open the position, go to the Skills tab, click Add skills, and add each skill with its expected proficiency. Every product designer now sees those skills on their profile.

Scenario: Rolling out skills across many roles at once
Your company is setting up skills for the first time across twenty positions. Instead of doing each one by hand, import your skills and positions together from a file and review the AI-generated result. See Importing skills with AI.

FAQs

Which method should I use?

If you want skills on employee profiles and in new reviews, use positions or skill mappings. If you only run classic 1-1 reviews, use the classic reviews option. Positions and mappings are the recommended path for most teams.

Can I use more than one method?

Yes. Positions and skill mappings work together, and an employee inherits skills from every mapping and position connected to them. The classic reviews option is separate and doesn't combine with the other two.

Why don't my assigned skills appear where I expect?

Skills connected through positions or mappings appear on profiles and in new reviews, not in classic reviews. Skills marked for classic reviews appear only there. Check that you used the method that matches where you're looking.
