Positions are how you describe the roles people hold in your company. They're shared across your Tellent talent products, so a position you create here is the same one used everywhere else in the suite. This article explains what positions are and walks you through creating, filling out, and managing them.
📌 Note: Creating and managing positions is available to administrators.
What positions are
A position represents a role in your company, such as Accountant, Product Designer, or Sales Manager. You assign employees to positions to structure who does what, and positions connect your people to the skills expected of them.
Positions are a flat list. Seniority isn't a setting on a position, so if you want to distinguish levels of the same role, create a separate position for each one.
📌 Note: To handle seniority, create one position per level. For example, "Junior Accountant" and "Senior Accountant" are two separate positions, not one position with two levels.
Create a position
You create positions from your company settings.
Go to Settings > Positions.
Click Add position.
Enter a name for the position. This is the only required field.
Save the position
Once the position exists, you can assign employees, add a description, and connect skills. Each of these is covered below.
Assign employees to a position
Add the people who hold this role. You can assign as many employees as you want.
Open the position.
In the employees section, search for and select the employees you want to assign.
To remove someone, click the remove control next to their name.
📌 Note: An employee can hold a position and later move to a different one. Removing an employee from a position doesn't delete them from your company, it only clears that role.-
Add a description
A description helps everyone understand what the role involves. You can write it yourself or let AI draft one for you.
Write it yourself: use the rich text editor to format the description with headings, lists, and emphasis.
Use AI: click the AI writing helper to generate a description you can then edit.
💡 Tip: Starting with AI and editing the result is often faster than writing from scratch. Generate a draft, then adjust it to match how your company actually talks about the role.
Assign skills to a position
You can connect skills to a position so the people in that role are assessed against the right expectations.
Assigning skills is covered in its own guide. See Assigning skills to employees for the full workflow.
💡 Tip: If you're setting up positions and skills for the first time, you can import them together and let AI connect them for you. See Importing skills with AI.
Manage positions
You can rename or delete a position at any time from Settings > Positions.
Rename a position
Go to Settings > Positions.
Open the position you want to rename.
Edit the name, then save.
Delete a position
Go to Settings > Positions.
Open the position you want to delete.
Click the delete control and confirm
⚠️ Important: When you delete a position, every employee assigned to it no longer has a position, and any skills connected to it are no longer connected to that position. The employees and skills themselves aren't deleted, but the connections are removed.
Examples
Scenario: Structuring your finance team by seniority
Your finance team has three levels of accountant. Because positions are a flat list, go to Settings > Positions and create three separate positions: "Junior Accountant," "Accountant," and "Senior Accountant." Assign each person to the position that matches their level, so each group can be given its own skill expectations later.
Scenario: Onboarding a new role quickly
You've just created a "Customer Success Manager" role and need it documented fast. Create the position, click the AI writing helper to draft a description, edit it to fit your team, and assign your three CSMs. In a few minutes the role is set up and ready to connect to skills.
